When you think of the Arctic, you might probably recall an animal that has become a real symbol of these icy areas. It's the polar bear.
These animals have long thick white fur. Unlike lions or tigers, they don't have any stripes or manes. Polar bears belong to a breed of bears with a white coat, but they have learnt to use it very effectively. Their white fur helps them to camouflage themselves in the snow and ice, and their thick layer of fat helps them to stay warm.
Legend has it that long ago polar bears were brown. One day, a lazy polar bear refused to hunt, and a shaman decided to punish him. The shaman turned the bear white so that he would be forced to hunt in the open, where it would be more difficult to hide.
What other adaptations do polar bears use to survive in the Arctic? First, their large feet provide their ability to walk on snow and ice. Their sharp claws help them to dig for food, and their thick fur helps to keep them warm. Polar bears also have a great sense of smell, which they use to find food.
Polar bears have never been domesticated by a man. They live as apex predators, which means they kill and eat other animals but aren't normally eaten by any other animals. Thus, they hunt and kill other animals, such as seals and walruses.
You can sometimes see this unusual animal at the zoo.
