The Victory Monument
141.8 metres tall
Moscow, Poklonnaya Hill
It is Russia's tallest monument. This triangular obelisk sculpted by Zurab Tsereteli symbolises Russian soldiers' defence of the homeland since 1898. At the height of 104 metres, there is a bronze statue of the Greek goddess Nike, the symbol of victory. The reliefs demonstrate key battles of the Great Patriotic War, like Stalingrad and Kursk. Golden letters spell out the names of heroic cities.
The monument's diameter is 37 times smaller than its height, making it surprisingly thin. The monument's stability in windy conditions is ensured by a special mechanism at its top that works like a seesaw to compensate the wind forces. The monument isn't always moveless, but it remains steady.
