Gertrude Simmons Bonnin (Zitkala-Sa)

Gertrude Simmons Bonnin, also known as Zitkala-Sa, was born on February 22, 1876, on the Yankton Indian Reservation. Having faced the strict cultural traditions imposed upon Native Americans, she became a force for Native American rights and Indigenous cultural preservation.

She attended a boarding school for Native American students, an experience that deeply influenced her life. In 1897, Zitkala-Sa graduated as one of the first Native American women from Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. It was a significant accomplishment, as higher education was rare for Indigenous women at the time. She received a degree in music. Later, Zitkala-Sa became an important figure in Indigenous literature. Her writing shed light on the injustices faced by Native American communities and challenged stereotypes. She used her influence to educate and promote cultural understanding.

In 1926, Zitkala-Sa and her husband formed the National Council of American Indians to connect the political activism of Natives across the country. They travelled, heard concerns, discussed policy and legislation, and registered voters. As some states began to adopt strategies similar to Jim Crow laws to disenfranchise Native people, Zitkala-Sa kept advocating for Native rights, suffrage, and self-governance until her death on January 26, 1938. She was buried at Arlington National Cemetery next to and sharing a headstone with her husband.

Zitkala-Sa's legacy as a writer, activist, and advocate for Indigenous cultural preservation continues to inspire and influence generations. Her extraordinary contributions to Native American rights and culture ensured a place in history that will never be forgotten.
