  • Determine what topic matches the statements.
  • Determine the main idea of each statement.

Listen to the audio. Match the statements 1–7 with the speakers A–F. There is one extra statement which you do not need to use

Now we are ready to start.

Speaker A: I live in a big city in a tower block and this is the most popular type of housing in my city. The house in which I live is multi-storey and many people consider this a disadvantage. I know for sure that the cost of land in the city is high, so the higher the house, the more apartments there are and, accordingly, the cheaper you can buy an apartment there.

Speaker B: If you ask me about the preferable type of dwelling for me, I would really like to live in a skyscraper. I've always dreamed of having a penthouse which is a very spacious apartment on top of a skyscraper with a panoramic view. It seems to me that this is a very prestigious and luxury type of housing, and, of course, very expensive. But maybe someday I will be able to afford it, why not.

Speaker C:I live in Britain in a detached house. Unlike the owners of terraced houses or semi-detached houses, we're the sole owners of the house. It has 4 bedrooms on the upper floors, two bathrooms, a living room, a dining room, and a study. We also have a garage, front garden, and rear garden. From my point of view, this is a fairly comfortable but expensive type of housing.

Speaker D:It seems to me that having a house is much more comfortable than a flat. First of all, the distinctive feature of the house is that it is more spacious. Therefore, for example, brothers and sisters do not need to share one room, since everyone has their own, like all other family members. Moreover, a house always has more storage space, which is also very convenient.

Speaker E: I believe that there are many more advantages than disadvantages in renting a house. I prefer renting an apartment because I hate living in one place all the time. I enjoy travelling and moving house. Also, I don't want to engage in repairs, since, as I believe, this is the main disadvantage of owning your own house. Therefore, in a rented apartment, you can avoid this.

Speaker F: When we go to the seaside, we are always faced with a choice of where to stay: whether to rent a villa or a hotel room. Of course, a villa is more prestigious and costs much more. But when we have enough money, we always choose a villa, as it is more convenient. First of all, the villa is more spacious. Also, villas often have a swimming pool, which is a substantial advantage as I really like sunbathing on the side of the pool.

You have 15 seconds to complete the task.
