Rules
Phrasal verbs are divided into 4 types:

  • Transitive Phrasal Verb = Phrasal verb + object
    (requires an object; without an object the verb loses its meaning).
  • Intransitive Phrasal Verb = Phrasal verb + object
    (does not need an object; sounds complete and expresses meaning without an object).
  • Separable Phrasal Verb = take back the shirt = take the shirtback = take it back
    (the verbs and particles can be separated; pronoun goes in the middle of the phrasal verb).
  • Inseparable Phrasal Verb = break intopieces \(\not = \) break piecesinto
    (the verbs and particles can't be separated).

  2. Shall I
    [pick you up|pick up you] at the airport?
  3. I hate
    [looking my younger brother after|looking after my younger brother]. He is a real pain in the neck.
