Prince Yuri Dolgoruki was Prince of the Russian cities of Vladimir and Suzdal. He was strong and brave. Soon he became Kiev Prince too. The city of Vladimir was in the North and Kiev was in the South. Kiev was the capital of Kievskaya Russ, its most important city.It was certainly difficult to rule the two cities which were situated in the opposite parts of the country. Yuri Dolgoruki sent his favourite son Andrei to Vladimir.Once, Yuri Dolgoruki, who was getting old, wanted to see Vladimir: to walk its streets, to speak to his son, and he started his trip to the North. A lot of people travelled with him. They travelled on their horses through wide fields and deep forests.
One afternoon when they were in the middle of the dark forest, Prince Yuri saw a large white cloud in front of him. Suddenly the cloud turned into a big animal with three heads. Its heads were of many colours.The Prince's men couldn't speak or move. But one young brave man began to ride his horse to the animal. A minute later the animal turned into a cloud and went up into the sky.Prince Yuri and his men couldn't understand what it was about but one of his powerful old men said he knew the answer, "This wonderful animal showed us that a place for a great city is not far from here.The city will have three sides because the animal had three heads. The colours of its heads were different, so people from different places will come to live in the new city."The Prince didn't believe his old man. But some hours later he and his men came to the hill situated on the Moskva River. He liked the place and started the new city there. "I'll give it the name of the river. It will be Moscow," he said.
