Read the facts and put the parts of the plan into the correct order
We still don't know much about our planet. Especially about its remote regions, where it is difficult to get to, and which have an extremely harsh climate. The remoteness and the incredible cold make Antarctica one of the places we really don't know much about. Here are some interesting facts about this «unknown» continent.
- There are places in Antarctica where there has been no rain or snow for 2 million years. In Antarctica, about one percent of the continent is free of ice. Such areas are called dry valleys or oases of the Antarctic.
- The largest known iceberg in size exceeded the area of Jamaica. The largest recorded iceberg in the world was the B-15 Iceberg which covered an area of 11,000 square kilometres. In 2000, the Iceberg B-15 broke up into small pieces which sailed out to sea.
- A long time ago Antarctica was a tropical continent and it could possibly become a tropical continent again due to carbon dioxide emissions. According to scientists, if current CO2 emissions rise, then the number of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere that existed millions of years ago can be reached again in the hundreds of years.
- Climate change is affecting gravity in Antarctica. The loss of ice in the west of the continent from 2009 to 2012 actually caused the gravitational field to fall over the region.
- Dog sledding on the continent was banned in 1993. Dog breeds have been banned because of fears that they may run away and harm local fauna or dog's barking may scare off the animals.
- Antarctica is the only continent without reptiles and snakes. It's connected with the cold climate which is completely inappropriate for these cold-blooded animals. Still, many birds and mammals live here. They form colonies and withstand severe climatic conditions.
- Most of the meteorites were found in Antarctica. Scientists say meteorites are falling everywhere with almost equal probability. However, if they get into the humid jungle, for example, humidity and oxygen can damage them. In Antarctica, where the climate is extremely dry, corrosion is almost impossible.
