There are two common ways of telling the time.

  1. We say the

    first and then the
    [hour|minutes]:
    • 8:10 = It's eight ten.
    • 5:30 = It's five thirty.
    • 6:45 = It's six forty-five.
    • 4:05 = It's fourohfive.
  2. We say the
    [hour|minutes]
    first, then add
    ["past"/"to"|"after"/"before"]
    and the
    [hour|minutes]:
    • 8:10 = It's tenpasteight.
    • 5:30 = It's halfpastfive.
    • 6:45 = It's a quartertoseven.
    • 4:05 = It's fivepastfour.
  3. We use
    ["past"|"after"]
to say how many minutes have passed after the given hour (from 1 to 30 minutes).
  4. We use
    ["before"|"to"]
to say how many minutes are left till the next hour (from 31 to 59 minutes).
