Modal verbs can perform different functions.
Modals can express:
Permission: can, may, might
Probability: may, might, should
Possibility: can, could, may, might, be able to
Criticism: could have done
Advice: had better, ought to, should
Obligation: must, have to, need
Prohibitions: can't, mustn't
Lack of necessity: don't need to
Offer: may, might, should, would

I can do this task easily. [necessity|permission|ability]
