A Many people might be very unhappy if they found themselves without friends to keep company with or to confide in. Others say that friends can never be a substitute for family. Is it fair to say, then, that family comes first, or does the significance of friendship overshadow the role of the family?

B To my mind, the bond between us and our families can never be as strong as the connection we have with even with our closest and dearest friends. Firstly, no matter how close a friend is to us, they may not always be there in times of need. If our friend moves house or changes schools contact between us will possibly become less frequent. Moreover, to our family we are always a priority. If need be, a family member will do anything in their power to be near us in good times or in bad, putting any other matters aside.

C Nevertheless, it can be argued that friends are of greater importance in our lives, especially for young people. For example, teens find it easier to trust their friends with their secrets, as they fear that their families will judge them.

D However, we should all realise that even when they seem strict and judgemental, our family members are only expressing their love and concern. Perhaps this is not always done in a mild manner, but even then it is well meaning.

E In conclusion, while friendship is an essential part of our lives, I strongly believe that the importance of family cannot be overlooked. As American writer Richard Bach said, "the bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other's life".
