Read the dialogue about King Henry VIII.

Рис. 1. Henry the VII (by Hans Holbein)

— Josh, how much do you know about King Henry VIII?

— Well, not much, actually. I've heard that he was a cruel, selfish and paranoid monarch and that he had six wives.

— You are quite right. He often used heresy and treason as excuses to execute people whose opinion was different from his.

— Yes, and even two of his wives. He wanted to divorce Catherine of Aragon, the first one, but he needed the Pope's permission to do that, because England was Catholic at the time. The Pope didn't give him the divorce, so Henry found another solution — he made himself the head of the church.

— He replaced Latin by English as the language of religious services and dissolved monasteries. Some of them became manors, some of them were demolished and the stones were used for other buildings.

— Is there a name for all his reforms in the Church?

— Historians call it the Reformation.

— Oh, I see.
