Read the biography of a famous scientist and tick the details mentioned in the text. More than one correct answer is possible.
Kathleen Mary Drew-Baker was born in 1901 in Leigh, England. As a child, she got very interested in seaweeds (water plants) and decided to study botany and biology. She was extremely enthusiastic about these fields of science. After finishing school, she won a scholarship at the University of Manchester.
Kathleen started her scientific research describing the sea flora of the Atlantic Ocean. She was also the first female professor at the University of Manchester. At that time women weren't supposed to make a career in science.
In 1928, Kathleen married Professor Henry Baker. They had two children later. Unfortunately, Kathleen didn't know that married women were prohibited to work as professors or teachers. That's why she had to leave the Manchester University and dedicate herself to bringing her children up. However, later she got back to her studies and discovered how Porphyra umbilicalis (one of the sea plants) reproduced.
This discovery made Kathleen famous. It also saved Japan in times of severe famine after WWII. We know this seaweed as one of the ingredients of a famous Japanese dish, sushi.
Kathleen Drew-Baker died of cancer in 1957. She has been respected by the botanical scientific society and worshipped by some religious Japanese who called her "The Mother of the Sea".
