ISLAND TRIP
Last month my year group at secondary school had the opportunity to go on a study trip to learn about the
architecture and culture of an island off our coast.
On the day we set out, we arrived at the harbour and boarded the ferry to the island. Everyone was excited,
although once we were on board and we’d left dry land behind, the sea started to feel rough and the waves were
bigger than they’d been back in the sheltered harbour, which wasn’t so enjoyable. However, on the way there we
were given a talk about satellite navigation and how it helps the ferry find its way on foggy days, for example.
We sailed across the short stretch of sea in less than an hour and when we arrived on the island, we went
straight off to visit an ancient castle, with spectacular views across the bay where we’d just landed. Then we went
to a museum that showed how people used to live and work on the island more than a century ago. It’s very
different now, of course.
Then we went inside a typical old farmhouse, where we learnt about old farming methods before the days of
technology and there was even a classroom from the village school – just as it looked 100 years ago. And some
of our group had actually had relatives that lived on the island in the past, so it was interesting to try and trace
family histories.
Everyone agreed it was a great trip, but I don’t think we’d realised how much we relied on mobiles – which didn’t
work on the island – so, on the way back we were really grateful to be returning to a world of internet access and
mobile phones!
