Why is fashion so important for teens?

Look at any advertisement for a fashion store, and you will notice that most of the models are teens. Fashion is an extremely important component of a teenage life, especially in Western culture. But why?

For many teenagers, fashion is the first social statement in their life. It is an outward means of expression, a way to present themselves to their classmates, friends, and the rest of the world.
