A Banking today is a lot more sophisticated than it once was. Unfortunately, the criminals who spend their lives trying to steal our money have also become smarter. In the past, all we had to do to protect ourselves from theft was to look after our wallets and purses and keep our doors locked. But these days, criminals can try and steal from us 24 hours a day, seven days a week, whether we are out shopping or sitting in front of our laptops at home. B These days, cash is much less common than it was, but it’s still important, and many of us use ATMs regularly. Thieves can use a number of techniques to try and steal your money while you’re using an ATM and before it’s even in your hands. One way is by installing a ‘skimmer’ to an ATM. This is a small device that reads the details on your card as you put it into the machine. Criminals then use the information to copy your card. Before you use a machine, look out for anything unusual attached to it and if you think something looks suspicious, walk away. E It’s also a good idea to avoid using open wi-fi networks in cafés, libraries or other public spaces to do your Internet shopping. These are unsecured, and anyone can be on the network viewing your online activities. As far as I’m concerned, the best place to do your shopping is at home.

F Finally, beware of links that people email you or that appear on your social media that offer massive discounts and stupid prices. They may not be what they seem. Never give your bank account details or card number to anyone you don’t know or trust, and never, ever pay in advance for a prize, a loan, or a job. And finally, if someone emails you asking you to look after a few million dollars for them in your bank account, you should click the delete and block button pretty quickly.
