There are many reasons why it is important not to feed wild birds.
Some food, such as dry biscuits, can cause birds to choke. Salted or dry-roasted peanuts can be high in a natural toxin that poisons birds, even though it is harmless to humans. Milk can cause severe stomach upsets or even death. Margarine or vegetable oils on bread can damage birds' feathers. Damaged feathers can affect waterproofing, as well as a bird's ability to maintain body temperature and even to fly. None of this is worth the risk. Unless you know things like this you may cause birds to die when you feed them.
There are other problems you can cause when you feed wild birds. When natural food is short, birds may take food from feeding tables back to their chicks. If it is suitable for the baby birds they can choke. Birds also get used to a feeding routine and become dependent on you for food. If you are away for a time, they can become disoriented.
When feeding trays and birdbaths aren't regularly cleaned, there is the danger of disease spreading. Many garden birds die each year from dirty bowls which breed parasites and bacteria.
