Read an interview with a career consultant, who works with teenagers.

Match the tips 1-5 with paragraphs a-d (there is ONE extra tip).

a. First of all, people will give you advice when you are young. But you don’t have to follow every piece of advice you hear. What worked for one person doesn’t have to work for another. However, you should try to be open-minded as well. Even if something you hear sounds crazy, think about it.

b. All jobs have their advantages and drawbacks. For some you have to get up early, for others the salary is not as good as you’d like it to be. What can I do about it? I must set my priorities. I must understand what is more important for me at this very moment and in the future. It’s essential to make a list of the things which are really important to you and choose your job accordingly.

c. The idea of having a lifelong career is going away. Lots of jobs will be automated and skills will become even more important. When you are choosing your first job, you should think: “What will I learn to do there”. And usually you have to do much more than the job description mentions. For example, working in a fast-food restaurant, in addition to ‘preparing food’ and ‘operating a cash-desk’, you will learn to work in a team, deal with difficult customers and manage your time. If you focus on developing skills (public speaking, marketing, sales, customer service, project management, delegating, networking, problem solving) as best you can early on, you’ll find you will quickly become better than your peers.

d. There are several reasons why this is important. First, working in a new place you have to step out of your comfort zone. Dealing with people older than you, customers, having responsibility – all of this will develop you much more than studying/exams ever could.

Second, such working experience will look great on your CV and make it much easier to get jobs in the future. But be careful, you mustn’t spend all your time on work and abandon studying.
