Read an essay about learning foreign languages from an early age and answer the questions below.
The question of whether children should learn a foreign language in the first years of school is much debated today. Many people consider learning a foreign language at primary school to be much more effective than at secondary school, while others take the opposite view. As for me, I am on the side with the first one.
To begin with, children learn a foreign language much faster at a young age and feel more confident in using it. I, for instance, have grown up speaking three different languages since the age of five. As a result, I have reached a higher level of proficiency and am not afraid to use these languages. Moreover, at secondary school, students have many new subjects. Consequently, they have a lot of homework. The more homework they need to do, the less time they have to improve their foreign language skills. As a result, students can not learn the language properly.
However, it is argued that learning a foreign language at primary school can cause children to confuse the foreign dialect and their native language. As a result, it may take longer for them to become fluent in their mother tongue. For example, children who were born and raised outside their home country have difficulty communicating with their family in their mother language.
Nevertheless, in my opinion, this problem can be easily solved. Parents should motivate their children to speak in their native tongue.
To conclude, I would like to say that if children start learning a foreign language at primary school, the result of learning will be more efficient.
