- "The Honeymoon Phase".
This is a fun time. Everything is great, exciting and new. You love the differences, meeting new people, tasting new food, seeing the different architecture, doing new things, having your new job. This phase can last days, weeks or months. - Culture shock has some phases.
- "The "Honeymoon is Over" Phase".
During this phase, you notice differences, even slight differences and typically not in a good way. You don't like people's attitudes, you have had enough of the food and just want your mum's home cooking. Life is too fast or slow, things are so much "better" at home, they celebrate the wrong holidays and so forth. During this phase, a person often feels anxious, angry, sad and irritable. - "The Negotiation Phase".
Essentially, during this phase, you decide whether you will continue to have negative feelings or negotiate past them to have more experience. If you're successful, you regain your sense of perspective, balance, humour and move on to the next phase. - "The "Everything is OK" Phase".
You feel more at home with the differences in the new culture. The person doesn't have to be in love with the new country \(as in the honeymoon phase\), but they can navigate it without any anxiety, negativity and criticism.
