‘Nemtsy’ was the word that Russian people used not only for the Germans but for all foreigners who did not speak Russian.

The Germans captured by Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century settled on the bank of the river Yauza and founded Nemetskaya Sloboda (modern Baumanskiy district). They were known to be talented craftsmen, doctors, gunsmiths and jewellers.

There were nearly 340 German and Dutch families in 1701. The place attracted other foreigners who served the Emperor. It was the place where Peter the Great met his military mentor and close associate Franz Lefort.

The Armenian community of Moscow is one of the largest Armenian communities outside Armenia and one of the largest ethnic minorities of the capital. Armenian settlements appeared in Moscow in the 15th century.

The Northwestern church of St Basil’s cathedral built in 1561 is named after Gregory the Illuminator to commemorate the friendship between the nations. Armenian merchants arrived in Moscow in 1660 to negotiate trading privileges with Tsar Aleksey Mikhailovich. They presented the monarch with an exquisite diamond throne decorated with ivory and precious stones. Nowadays, the throne is kept at the Moscow Kremlin Armoury Museum and is considered a treasure of the collection.

What is more, the lyrics of the official Moscow anthem Moya Moskva (My Moscow) were written by an Armenian – Sergey Agranyan.
