“The Golden Ring” is a tourist route including 4 ________
Russian towns located 50-200 km from Moscow. The towns are called
“open-air museums” and feature unique
monuments of Russian architecture of the 12th –18th
centuries, comprising fortresses, monasteries and convents, cathedrals and
churches. These towns are among the most picturesque in the country and
prominently feature Russia’s onion domes. The term “Golden Ring” has no
historical background. It appeared only in the middle of the 20th
century when a famous Soviet photographer chose the most interesting towns
around Moscow and later described his journey. 5 __________,
each town of the Golden Ring played an important role in medieval Russia and
preserves a lot of architectural monuments of those times. Actually there is no official list

the Golden Ring, with the exception of the eight principal cities of Yaroslavl,

Vladimir, Sergiev Posad, Pereslavl Zalessky,

from this, the cities of Palekh,
Plyos, Shuya, Gorokhovets,
Gus-Khrustalny, Murom, Yuriev-Polsky, Rybinsk, Tutaev, Uglich,
Kasimov (from 2015), and
Kaluga (from 2016) are also considered to be part of the Ring. Yaroslavl is
located on the Volga River some 150 miles northeast of Moscow. It was 7 ___________
in the early 11th century by Yaroslav
the Wise – one of the greatest rulers of medieval Russia. By the 13th century
the settlement already had stone churches within monasteries, which was
unusual during a time when most buildings were made of logs. The city center is
small enough to visit all the main attractions on foot. And don’t forget to
