Have you heard of Windsor Castle? It's the oldest inhabited castle in the world. It’s also the largest.
Windsor Castle has been the family home of British kings and queens since it was built almost a thousand years ago by William the Conqueror, who invaded England from Normandy in 1066. He chose the site for the castle - just over 20 miles from London -and building started around 1070. It took about 16 years to build.
Since then, 39 kings and queens have lived at Windsor Castle. Today, the castle is used regularly for ceremonial and state events, and many presidents, leaders and ambassadors from other countries attend events there, sometimes staying the night. More than 500 people work at the castle, and it's a major tourist attraction: more than a million people visit it each year.
There's a lot for visitors to see and do at the castle, and most people spend at least two or three hours there looking around. It's open most days of the year, and you can book tickets in advance. The entry fee isn't cheap (£20 for an adult, £11.70 for under 17s and disabled people) but there are discounts for families and groups of fifteen or more.
From London, you can easily get there by train or coach, and many tour companies offer day trips to the castle. Although it's on a huge piece of land with many different buildings, there's actually no visitor car park, so if you go there by car, you have to park in a public car park in Windsor town centre. However, the castle is an easy walk from the centre.
The State Apartments are one of the main attractions at the castle. They're not just beautiful and splendid rooms from history. They also serve as an amazing art gallery, containing some of the finest paintings in the world, by artists such as Rubens and Rembrandt.
Another extremely popular attraction at the castle is Queen Mary's Dolls' House. As it says on the official Windsor Castle website, this is 'the largest, most beautiful and most famous dolls' house in the world'. The dolls' house took three years to build, from 1921 to 1924, and was created by the famous architect Edwin Lutyens. Many other artists and designers contributed objects to the dolls' house. It's quite incredible - a miniature manor house with all the rooms, including a library with tiny books, electricity, running water, elevators, and a garden.
There are plenty of other things to see and do at Windsor Castle, including a visit to the Semi-State Rooms, a tour of the Precinct, special exhibitions, and a look round the beautiful St George's Chapel, where ten kings and queens are buried. Many visitors take advantage of a free multimedia tour of the castle, which you can listen to in a number of different languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese and Mandarin.
Windsor Castle has had a long history and has faced some difficult times. One recent challenge was in 1992, when, on 22nd November, a fire quickly spread around the castle. More than 100 rooms were damaged, some being completely destroyed. Firefighters battled hard against the fire for hours, and eventually, it was brought under control. It took exactly five years, and an enormous amount of money, to repair the damage.
