Protecting the French language
Can you imagine paying a $100 fine for saying the word 'fast food' instead of 'restauration rapide'? France (RECENT) issued laws prohibiting the use of English if there is a French word that can be used instead. Why do they do it? Word borrowing happens whenever groups of people that speak (DIFFER) languages have steady contacts with each other. At least one group is bound to use some of the other group’s words. Why then do the French feel so (STRONG) against using English words that they would pass laws to stop it? The French value their language highly and their (WILLINGNESS) to blend it with other languages has much to do with international relations. Any language that is used for international purposes is called lingua franca, which means “French language” as for a long time French has been the language of politics, commerce, and other international affairs. In order to preserve the uniqueness of the French language, an (ORGANISE) called The French Academy was established. This group of people became the national authority on the French language. For about 350 years the Academy has made numerous (DECIDE ) about the proper use of French.
