Ancient Greeks went to the theatre not only to see actor's play. They also visited meetings, events, received important news and voted in elections. Performances in the theatre were a part of a festival honouring the Greek god Dionysus and became a significant part of Greek culture.
The open-air theatres were constructed on hilltops and could frequently accommodate more than 18,000 people.
The design of the theatres allowed everyone in the crowd to get a good view of the action and to hear the actors clearly. A ring dance floor (orchestra) was in the centre of the theatre, with an altar devoted to Dionysus. Inside this circle, there was a raised area that served as the platform. The actors were all men. They wore enormous masks to express emotions.
Comedies and tragedies were the two types of Greek plays. Greek tragedies were very serious plays with a moral lesson. They normally told the tale of a legendary hero. Tragedies were more serious than comedies. They shared daily stories and sometimes mocked Greek celebrities and politicians.
