- difference in using of words similar in meaning and synonyms (look, watch, glance, see; trip, travel, voyage, journey etc);
- difference in using of words very close in sounding and spelling but different in meaning (again/against, effect/affect, beside/besides etc);
- dependent prepositions and word patterns (rely on smb, fall in love with smb, throw in/at, take care of etc)
Charles Dickens and His Family
Charles Dickens was a well-known novelist of the Victorian Era. He was famous for his compositions A \(\boxed{\boldsymbol{32}}\) _____ Carol in Prose: Being a Ghost-story of Christmas, Little Dorrit, Great Expectations, and others. Dickens had also written many fascinating short stories.
One of them is The Child’s Story. There, the writer allegorically describes a life path of a man. It starts from childhood and ends in the elderly \(\boxed{\boldsymbol{33}}\) _____ . He remembers to mention his first love and family \(\boxed{\boldsymbol{34}}\) _____. There is a theory about Dickens: that his bright imagination let him communicate with the characters of his books. Regarding this, they turned out to become so vivid and colourful.But Dickens himself had a difficult family life. He was a multi-children father with ten children — Catherine and Charles had seven sons and three \(\boxed{\boldsymbol{35}}\) _____. His wife was Catherine Thomson Hogarth; she was the eldest daughter of his comrade George Hogarth, a journalist. An interesting fact is that George Hogarth himself had ten children as Charles Dickens eventually did. Catherine’s sister Georgina lived with the Dickens couple and helped them to \(\boxed{\boldsymbol{36}}\) _____ their children. Despite the seemingly happy reality, the family relationship in the writer’s family was rather complicated. The children were often ill, and the relations between the spouses were often extremely tense.
In 1857, Charles Dickens met the love of his \(\boxed{\boldsymbol{37}}\) _____ . This woman was Ellen Ternan, an actress. The young lady was only eighteen years old. The novelist was very attached to her: he even wrote her into his will. This situation could not but affect his marriage, and in 1858, Charles and Catherine got divorced.
The writer died in 1870. After his death, his glory was only growing. His works are still loved by people — for their easy-to-perceive narration style and gentle humour. But \(\boxed{\boldsymbol{38}}\) _____ people know that this humour helped the author to mask his hard luck and experience. Ironically, Dickens got the reputation of an Old England’s cheerful writer.
