Roraima
Roraima is the name of a mountain that is located in the Guiana Highlands. Surprisingly, this mountain is a fork between the three states of Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana. But the mountain can be approached from Venezuela. In addition to the unusual triangular shape, the mountain consists of ancient sedimentary rocks that are more than two billion years old. This means that it is the oldest on the planet. Locals call this place the axis of the world.
There is a legend that inside this mountain there is a tree on which all kinds of vegetables and fruits from all over the world are growing. The mountain is surrounded by rocks up to 400 meters high. It is not surprising that for many centuries it has been surrounded by a halo of legends, myths and secrets of indigenous peoples.
Among other things, the mountain is a part of the Canaima National Park. If there is a mountain, then there will always be a climber who wants to conquer it. And there are more and more of them every year. To begin with, the traveller's route will be built to the village from where the ascent begins. First, you need to fly there by plane since the village is located in the border part of the country, then you will need to get there by bus. After that, the movement goes directly to the mountain. The indigenous population is used to tourists and therefore helps in every way along the way. Experienced travellers and conquerors of Mount Roraima are advised to spend at least four days climbing. It is important to enjoy the nature of the surrounding mountains. You can take only 15 kg of things with you. Since the celebration takes place on the territory of the National Park, all natural resources are part of it. You cannot take a stone or a plant as a souvenir. This is forbidden. The height of the mountain is 2772 meters. Since most of its surface is flat, it is quite realistic to put a pallet right on top. Climbers often complain only about sharply changing weather conditions.
Why is the mountain so flat? The indigenous people found an explanation for this. Legend has it that the mountain used to be the largest tree in the world. Everything that was necessary for a person and all living things to maintain life grew on it. But the insidious villain cut down a tree and caused a flood. So the mountain is essentially the stump of that great tree.
The first ascent of the mountain took place in 1884. Fortunately, on one of the ascents, which is considered the simplest, there is a natural stone staircase. The mountain is also famous for its unusual vertical waterfalls which are fuelled by heavy rains in this part of the world.
The springs of the waterfalls are covered with pink quartzite from the inside, and the algae living in it are multicoloured. At the edge of the triangular plateau, there are rough cracks, similar to impressive chasms. This is the result of erosion. And here, as always, there is an explanation: those who believe that the continents broke away from each other believe that there are cracks on this mountain.
In addition to quartz rocks, orchids, ferns and mosses grow on the surface of the bark. There are carnivorous plants like the Venus Flycatcher. Typical jungle inhabitants such as hummingbirds, tree frogs also live here. The mountain became the inspiration for the novel "The Lost World" by Arthur Conan Doyle. But in reality, no dinosaur fossils have ever been found on or around the mountain. For those who cannot hike up the mountain, they can see it from a helicopter. At the same time, the helicopter will not be able to land on its plateau.
Although the mountain looks like a barren plain, as you move along it, you realise that it is very inhabited. The haze over the mountain makes it seemingly endless and deserted.
