Homesick
When I was at school, there has been adjusted process of organising trips to Europe. They were arranged by our German teachers. Those teachers looked very alike, everyone thought they were sisters, although they were not even related. Usually, they announced recruiting for children starting from eight grade and older. They took everyone who wanted to go abroad and who could afford it.
In 2010, I was among those who went to Europe. The money that I was given for my birthday that year, I spent on this trip. It was scheduled for fall break in November. In our group, there were about 15 people, boys and girls from different classes. I went with my female classmate. We rode the train together and shared hotel rooms. Of course, I was really looking forward to this trip to see Europe and practice my English, which by that time I already knew quite well.
The whole family came to the station to see me off: mum, dad and my younger sister. I remember very well the moment when the train started and we drove off. I suddenly realised that I was going all alone. Although there were two teachers with me, whom I knew well, my classmate and guys from the school, whom I also saw, in one second I felt very lonely. And from this feeling of loneliness, I experienced a sharp pain that somehow accompanied me throughout the journey. It was expensive to make calls because of roaming, and back then not everyone had smartphones, so it was impossible to be in touch all the time.
The trip itself was wonderful, although I was in constant melancholy and homesickness. On the first day, we travelled by train to Belarus where we crossed the border. Then we went by bus through Poland. In some Polish town, we had a stop for lunch. They brought us huge portions of very tasty chops with potatoes. I've never seen a dish this big. Then we drove for a very long time to Prague, Czech Republic. This city amazed me with its beauty and architecture. We walked around the old town, bought souvenirs and rode a boat, where we were treated to national cuisine. Then we went to Switzerland where we arrived in the evening and walked around the evening Bern. It was a fabulous evening. The entire historical centre was shining, it smelled of delicious pastries, and there were smiling people around. In Switzerland, we visited several cities for several days. The most vivid memories of Switzerland were left by swans in Lucerne which I fed with cookies and cheese fondue. In Switzerland, I saw the mountains for the first time and understood why everyone is so fond of the Alps. The last country on our trip was France. We visited the cities of Colmar and Strasbourg. There, for the first time, I saw a large number of bicycles in the city and new trams. In Russia, only old trams were running everywhere, and new ones appeared much later.
Yes, it was different then. The euro cost 40 roubles, I thought it was a lot, but I spent all my pocket money during my trip on souvenirs and gifts. I brought beautiful beads to my mum, a beer glass to my dad and various figurines, chocolates, magnets, a pocket organ and a bunch of other things to my sister. For some reason, I missed her the most. Probably then, at the age of 14, I separated from my family for the first time, and I was all by myself. It had to happen sooner or later, of course. But it's a pity that the pain of parting with loved ones prevented me from fully enjoying the trip.
