Mary Kingsley

Mary Kingsley  (BE) one of the very few women explorers in Victorian times. She was born in 1862 in a lower middle class family. At the time it  (NOT BE) customary for girls to receive formal education, so she didn't take a lot of lessons. However,  (SHE) father, not only a doctor, but also a traveller and a keen reader, had a big library where she spent hours reading books about distant lands and exotic cultures. After her parents’ death she inherited a little fortune and could afford to travel around the world. (DEAR) wish was to visit Africa, and later she did. She  (EXPLORE) the jungle and encountered many dangerous animals in the wild. She was a very brave and unusual woman. Mary Kingsley even conquered Mount Cameroon wearing a long black dress.

Lots of incredible things about African culture (DISCOVER) due to her work. She spoke out against their westernisation that, as she believed, damaged local traditions, unique culture and lifestyle.
