Katherine Johnson

Katherine Johnson was an American scientist who grew up at the time of racial segregation. In 1952, Katherine learned that the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) was seeking 25.____________(MATHS). At first, she was assigned to the group of black women "computers" who did the number-crunching to analyse data collected by NACA's research aircraft. Her special talent was soon recognised and she was 26.____________(TEMPORARY) transferred to an all-male, all-white team in the flight research department, which then became her 27.____________(PERMANENCE) place of work.

After the 28.____________(SURPRISE) launch of the Soviet Union's Sputnik satellite in 1957, the United States undertook a restructuring of NACA that formed the core of today's NASA. Racial and gender segregation was abolished. So Katherine was in the right place at the right time to play a key role in the early US space efforts. Katherine Johnson worked at NASA until her retirement in 1986.

In 2015, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by US President Barack Obama. The following year, her story, along with those of other black American women at Langley, was chronicled in the 29.____________(REMARK) book "Hidden Figures" by Margot Lee Shetterly.
