Philippe Pinel

Philippe Pinel was a French physician who developed a more 25._____________(HUMAN) psychological approach to the care of psychiatric patients that was 26._____________(USUAL) for the period. Today, his approach is known as moral therapy.

Born in Jonquières, France, in 1745, Pinel was the son of a master surgeon. Abandoning his studies in theology in 1770, Pinel attended France's leading 27._____________(MEDICINE) school at the University of Montpellier. In 1778, Pinel moved to Paris, where he edited the journal Gazette de santé, which included articles on mental illness. In 1793, he was appointed superintendent of the Bicêtre hospice, and two years later, became chief physician of the Salpêtrière hospital, which had 600 beds for the 28._____________(MENTAL) ill. It was at Bicêtre and Salpêtrière where he focused on the 29._____________(DEVELOP) of his moral therapy and modernised the attitude to mental patients. Pinel worked at Salpêtrière for the rest of his life and died in 1826.
