Ernest Starling
Ernest Starling was a British physiologist. His ideas were important parts of the British contribution to physiology, which at that time led the world.
He was born in 1866 in London, UK. Starling studied medicine at Guy's Hospital Medical School and became a demonstrator in physiology in 1887. In 1890, he began a lifelong 25._____________(ASSOCIATE) with fellow physiologist William Bayliss at University College of London. They made a good team: Starling was said to be visionary and 26._____________(PATIENT), while Bayliss was cautious and 27._____________(METHOD).
Until 1902, it was believed that organs only communicated with each other using electrical signals conducted by nerves. That year, Starling and Bayliss performed an experiment that proved that organs communicate using 28._____________(CHEMISTRY) messengers, as well as via the 29._____________(NERVE) system. Their discovery kick-started the field of endocrinology.
In addition to his work with Bayliss on the function of the endocrine system, Starling made significant contributions to the understanding of the mechanisms that regulate heart function.
