The first portal appeared in 1697 because of a skyquake. It was beautiful but scary, so nobody decided to go through the portal. The second crack appeared two years later after a tsunami, so it was nature that was opening the portals.
Our first travellers went on their expedition to the human world in 1699 and returned a week later. They found some valuable materials there: paper, water and others. We couldn't produce them in our world, so we needed portals to move those materials here.
Old portals began to close, and we had to learn to predict the opening of new ones. We noticed that a month before the opening mountains go up from the bottom of the ocean and the moon becomes orange. A day before the opening the place for the future crack becomes red and starts burning.
Today our modern engineers know how to open the portals with the help of the moon power. Random cracks still appear sometimes when the weather's bad. Our engineers control the damage after those random openings. Nobody, except for the engineers, is allowed to use the portals.
