Mozart
was born in 1756, the son of a professional musician. From an early age, he
showed all the signs of musical talent. By the age of five, he could read and
write music.
While
he and his father were travelling around Europe, Mozart met many different
musicians and composers. While he was visiting the Vatican in Rome, he listened
to a piece of music, which had been kept secret. No one had published a copy of
the piece before, but Mozart managed to write it down from memory. Mozart had a
powerful ability to learn and remember the music he heard from others.
By
the age of 30, he had become one of the most famous composers in Europe and had
a large apartment in Vienna, which is now a tourist attraction. It was here that
he wrote his famous opera The Marriage of Figaro. However, despite his fame, he
moved between poverty and prosperity. This difficulty was worse when, in 1786,
Austria was involved in a war that led to a lower necessity for musicians.
