In America, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of every November. Thanksgiving is a national holiday. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday in November to be the national day of Thanksgiving.

Mainly Thanksgiving is celebrated in America. It is also celebrated in Canada, Liberia, Grenada, Puerto Rico and Norfolk Island.

In 1620, the Pilgrims sailed to America in search of a new home. They landed in Massachusetts and created a village. After their first successful harvest, they organised a celebratory harvest and invited the Native Americans. There were 40 Native Americans and 53 Pilgrims at the feast. The celebration lasted three days.

People usually have turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, ham, cranberry sauce, gravy and pumpkin pie. About 46 million turkeys are cooked each year.

The Friday after Thanksgiving is called Black Friday in the United States and is the first official shopping day for Christmas.
