A Leonardo da Vinci was a gifted painter, musician, scientist and inventor. He designed submarines, flying machines, and even contact lenses. No one else accomplished what he did, and he lived 500 years ago!

B In Milan, Leonardo worked as a painter and an engineer for a duke from 1482 to 1499. He completed only six works for 17 years, but these finished works include "The Last Supper" and "The Virgin of the Rocks". "The Last Supper" is an immense wall painting in the dining hall of the Monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie. No doubt, both paintings are widely acknowledged to be the world's artistic masterpieces. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation declared the Monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie with "The Last Supper" a World Heritage Site in 1980.

C He was a leading figure of the Italian Renaissance, a period of great achievement in the arts and sciences. Two of his paintings, "Mona Lisa" and "Last Supper" won him great fame.

D Leonardo da Vinci was born on the 15th of April in 1452, near Vinci, in what is now Italy. When he was about 15 years old, he began studying with the artist Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence.

Verrocchio taught Leonardo about painting, sculpture, and the design of mechanical devices.

E While in Milan, Leonardo was interested in observing nature. Leonardo thought that by carefully observing objects and accurately drawing them, an artist could obtain scientific knowledge. He recorded his observations in many notebooks that contained a variety of subjects, including the structure of the human body, the science of flight, machinery, painting and architecture. Leonardo developed a lot of plans for an aeroplane and a helicopter.
