A choice of the British monarch was traditionally determined on the hereditary and primogeniture principles. This meant that the oldest male child of the monarch was the next in line to the throne. Under the terms of the Act of Settlement of 1701, the monarch and the monarch's spouse could not be Catholics because the British monarch was also the Head of the Church of England. In 2015, the primogeniture principle was abolished. Now the next monarch in line can be an eldest female child, and the British monarch can marry a Catholic.
