Sally Jones considers herself lucky because she grew up speaking two languages. She says that being bilingual has helped her in choosing her career because she realised the value of knowing more than one language from an early age. As a result, she was determined to become a language teacher when she graduated from university. She has been teaching for a year now and hopes that she will continue in the profession for many years to come.

As a Public Relations Manager for a company that promotes top sports tourism events, Natasha Pearce has travelled extensively. Staying at luxury hotels and flying comfortably in first class across the globe is a substantial bonus of her job. She says: "I appreciate that I have had the opportunity to experience other countries in a manner only available to the very affluent."

Technology has finally come to the classroom. No longer do teachers have to rely on the traditional techniques of 'talk and chalk' in their efforts to make their lessons interesting and understandable. Modern aids such as interactive whiteboards and other computerised technology free up teachers' time so they can concentrate on the individual needs of their students.

Fearless thrill-seekers have developed yet another extreme sport, which is beginning to gain in popularity. The bold participants of volcano surfing ride down the sides of volcanoes on specially prepared boards at speeds of over 50 miles an hour. The sport can be hazardous as the surface is very rough, with sharp jagged rocks that can cause injury if a surfer comes off their board. Still, the sport has generated lots of interest and has growing numbers of participants.

Volunteering is the ideal way to spend a few spare hours, particularly for the recently retired who have many skills and a lot of time to offer. Volunteer workers provide assistance in understaffed places like hospitals and provide support for the sick and vulnerable. Many volunteers get great satisfaction from their work and enjoy the feeling of being useful and effective.

For many people, travelling has become a quest for adventure and exposure to different cultures and places. The traditional package holiday to popular European destinations is not for them. Trekking up Mount Everest or sailing down the Amazon in a canoe is much more their style. Their main aim in travelling is to explore lesser-known places and sample the unusual and dangerous.

Many pensioners enjoy taking up a new sport on retirement. One of the most popular is Lawn Bowls. It is a sport that does not demand a great deal of physical stamina and is safe for competitors of any age. But despite its image of a very slow and gentle game, it is a sport that requires a high degree of skill. Competitors take the game very seriously and put in many hours of practice before games.
