The use of last names is a relatively new thing and probably came about to distinguish between two people with the same first name. Last names could be based on things such as the first name of the father (Peterson, son of Peter), the location of the family home (Cliff, lived near a steep hill), the father's occupation (Smith, worked as a blacksmith), or one of the person's physical characteristics (Armstrong, having strong arms).

The search for one's roots, or family tree, is becoming a very popular way to spend one's free time. For many, it answers the need to find out where they have come from. Apart from the sense of pleasure, the amateur genealogist will get as more and more facts come to light, tracing one's family background is a valuable way of educating future generations about the family's history.

Stamp collecting, both as a profession and a pastime, has been around for a very long time. The first postage stamp, named the Penny Black, was issued in Britain in 1840 and pictured a member of the royal family, Queen Victoria, as a young woman. For those amateur collectors who might have one of these rarities, it will be of considerable interest to know that they now sell for up to £1,600, depending on their condition.

BMX racing is a hair-raising sport that is being taken up by ever-increasing numbers of enthusiasts. It involves maintaining control over your bike at all times. Only the very foolish would allow their minds to wander for even one second as they could be easily injured. Steven Armstrong got hooked on the sport as a seven-year-old when his father took him to his first BMX rally to see riders compete. Steven wouldn't, and probably couldn't, ever give up this sport that forces him to challenge himself and takes up so much of his spare time.

Smith is a very common last name and there are many very well-known people who use it. Adam Smith, a world-renowned pioneer of political economics from the 1700s, is a good example. His father, also named Adam Smith, was a lawyer who married Margaret Douglas in 1720 and died six months before his son was born.

The relationships formed within families are decidedly the most important bonds we will ever form. The love between a mother or father and their children is unconditional and the support that parents offer their children is invaluable. Early childhood is a time of great learning, and as a result the interaction between family members has a great influence on all aspects of a child's development, including the shaping of the future of the child.

Not many people would consider jumping out of an aeroplane in mid-air a particularly good way to wind down or relieve stress. For the many people who love this demanding sport, however, what they do is not mad but the perfect way to take their minds off the pressures of family and money worries. Because you have to concentrate very hard when you go skydiving, the anxieties of daily life just seem to disappear. Beginners are hooked up to two instructors who talk them through every movement, so this unique pastime is not really quite as risky as it may first appear.
