New Zealand is in the South Pacific Ocean, a long way from anywhere. Australia is the closest country and that's two thousand kilometres away. New Zealand is fairly isolated and this makes it special. New Zealand's history is special, its weather, its people, its flora and fauna are also special.
New Zealand is situated on three islands. Two of them are quite large — the North Island and the South Island. The third island is much smaller, its name is Stewart Island. The territory of New Zealand is about the same size as the lands of the United Kingdom. But the population of the country is only four million people while sixty-one million people live in Britain.
The main language of New Zealand is English. New Zealand was once part of the British Empire and still has the British flag as part of its own flag. The first people who made New Zealand their home were the Maori. They arrived from Polynesia in wooden boats. The Maori called New Zealand "Land of the Long White Cloud". About the year 1700, the first Europeans came to New Zealand.
The weather in New Zealand is usually never really hot or really cold. It is hotter on the North Island where most people live. It often rains and the weather can change quickly. Sometimes you can get many various kinds of weather in one day, especially on the South Island.
Thousands of people go to New Zealand. Some of them go there on holiday. They want to see the beautiful countryside and to enjoy sports. While they are there, tourists can learn interesting facts about Maori and hear many Maori stories about New Zealand. Today the biggest business in the country is tourism. Farming is also important. New Zealand has a lot of water, clean air and good earth. The country is famous for its butter,cheese and meat.
