My friends and I are fond of hiking in the mountains. I love the silence and the views, especially in winter. We have been skiing for quite a long time, for about five years. Today my friends and I got into several real avalanches for the first time. Three people were carried away. The first time everything happened unexpectedly, although we knew that the weather was avalanche-prone.
We went skiing and suddenly noticed that the top layer of snow cracked a little. It is one of the signs of an avalanche situation. We rode along the old tracks, which were already covered with snow. Suddenly, I saw the slope behind me slowly move. I froze. I hit the ground with skis and poles. A small wave passed about knee-deep. I looked back, but my friend was no longer there—he was carried away by a wave of snow. We went down for a friend, freed him from the snow captivity and realized that there was a huge wave of snow above us. It was life-threatening to make sudden movements. We were returning in our tracks, already in a deep funnel of snow.
We were returning through the forest when the second wave overtook us. When I realized that I was carried by the snow, I began to make swimming movements. My skis were blown away. I miraculously survived and did not break my limbs.
After all that happened on this day, it would be foolish not to draw proper conclusions for the future. Today we are lucky. In many ways we managed to avoid more serious consequences precisely thanks to the correct actions of our team. But many mistakes were made: firstly, not everyone had the necessary equipment, and secondly, it was necessary to pay more attention to the primary signs of avalanche danger, such as cracks in the upper layer, snow settling, and not to climb fresh slopes!
