A. Alexandra Feodorovna Romanova, the last Empress of the Russian Empire, was born in 1872 in Darmstadt, Germany. She was a daughter of Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse, and a granddaughter of Queen Victoria. Originally the name of the tsarina was Princess Alix of Hesse and by Rhine. As the Princess was converted to Orthodoxy after her marriage, she got an Orthodox name and a patronymic. All Russian princesses, who came from abroad, received the patronymic after the name of a famous Russian icon, "The Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God". This icon was very respected and thought to be the family protector.

B. After becoming the Russian Empress, Alexandra Feodorovna had a life full of hardships. But she had a strong faith in Russia and did her best to make the lives of the Russian people easier. It was a hard-working woman who had never been idle and who brought her children up as diligent and sympathetic people. Empress Alexandra was good at crafts: she sewed, embroidered, and darned clothes. The Russian Empress had a knack for different skills.

C. Alexandra Feodorovna was the creator of the Orthopaedic Institute. First, she allocated money for expanding a small hospital. However, her counsellor and orthopedist Carl Horn convinced the Empress to build a large medical facility for people who suffered from bone tuberculosis. This hospital was intended to treat adults and children. Empress Alexandra donated 62000 roubles to this project. The hospital was opened in 1906; 9 doctors and many sisters of mercy started working with the first patients. This Orthopaedic Institute was considered the best in Europe: unique and complex surgeries were performed there. This institute was not the only medical facility that was built and developed due to Alexandra Feodorovna: there had been plenty of them.

D. Empress Alexandra was famous for her voluntary work. After World War I began in 1914, the Empress and her royal daughters took the course for becoming sisters of mercy. From November 6, 1914, Alexandra Feodorovna and the princesses worked as nurses in the hospitals of Tsarskoye Selo. She assisted the doctors in operations and took care of the injured. Together with the princesses, they sewed clothes for soldiers and their families. Empress Alexandra had poor health, but she worked hard to help other people with no thought for herself.
