Mark Twain

One of the most famous American writers, Mark Twain, was born in a small village named Florida, which is now uninhabited. It is situated in the state of Missouri, the USA. The great author came into our world in 1835 under the name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens. He had several pen names. Russian schoolchildren know this well-known man as Mark Twain, and his first book they read at school is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

Mark Twain was famous for his kind humour and fascinating stories. Besides writing books, he was a lecturer, publisher, entrepreneur, and humourist. He wrote plenty of books in different genres.

Samuel Clemens took his famous pen name from marine themes. Before he became a writer, he worked as a pilot on a steamboat, and he adored this job. But in 1861, he had to quit because the Civil War began. Private Shipping Companies stopped their business, and Samuel had to find another job.

Among his hobbies, the writer was fond of science. He was friends with Nikola Tesla, a well-known physicist and inventor. Some of Twain's books prove that he had brilliant knowledge in different fields of science. For instance, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court describes plenty of technological moments of the author's time, which showed his awareness of scientific issues. Mark Twain was indeed a many-sided person.

He had lost his four children and his wife. At the end of his life, Twain was in a state of depression, but he still had his sense of humour. For example, when he read his obituary published mistakenly, he said: "The report of my death was an exaggeration."

Mark Twain died in 1910 at the age of 74.
