Fill in the gaps
Inversion is used to give [ ]. To make it we put the main verb or the [ ] verb before the [ ]. We use do/does (Present Simple) or did (Past Simple) and the [ ] form of the main verb in affirmative sentences with inversion. The inversion occurs:
- after certain expressions (e.g. Only in this way, Under no circumstances, In no way, On no account, etc.) when they are placed at the [ ] of the sentence;
- after [ ] with negative meaning (e.g. Never, Seldom, Rarely, Scarcely, Hardly) in front position;
- after not + a [ ] phrase or a clause in initial position (Not since, Not only .... but also, Not till/until, Not even once);
- in [ ] sentences when should, were, had (Past Perfect) are placed at the beginning of the sentence. Note that "if" is [ ];
- after so, such, to such a degree in clauses placed at the beginning of a [ ];
- after as, neither/nor, so to express [ ];
- after [ ] of place at the beginning of the sentence (e.g. Here, There);
- in [ ] speech, when the reporting verb (e.g. said) usually comes before the subject if it is too long.
