Infinitive and V-ing forms
В данном правиле речь идёт о том, какие глаголы принимают форму инфинитива с частицей to, а какие принимают форму V-ing.

Например, глаголы hope, expect и learn обычно используются с инфинитивом.

He learnt to ski in the Alps last winter.

После некоторых глаголов (tell, advise, ask) инфинитив следует за дополнением.

He asked his friend to bring him a book.

С такими глаголами, как enjoy, finish, admit, mind, feel like, can't help, look forward to, prevent используется форма V-ing.

We can't help smiling when we saw her.

Некоторые глаголы, такие как begin, start, like, love, hate, continue, cease могут использоваться как с инфинитивом, так и с формой V-ing, и в таком случае их значения различны лишь немного или не отличаются вовсе.

She likes to read fantasy books. / She likes reading fantasy books.

He continued to work. / He continued studying.

Иногда значение меняется, если мы используем ту или иную форму.

We mean to finish this project no matter what happens. = to be determined to do it, to intend.

She's determined to get a ticket for the concert even if it means paying a lot of money. = to signify, to result in.

They regret to inform us that our request has been rejected. = to feel regret for an action first and then to do the action.

She regrets spending so much money because now she has lost her job. = to do an action first and later to regret it.

Remember to call us tomorrow. = to remember an action first and then to do the action.

I remember spending time together when we were both little kids.= to do an action first and later to remember it.

I stopped to pick up the key. = to stop in order to do another action.

I stopped eating fish three years ago. = to quit.

I tried to find a well-paid job. = to attempt to do something.

John tried asking his sister to help him. = to experiment, to do an action in order to test what happens.
