| A) Educational systems are established to provide education and training, often for children and the young. A curriculum defines what students should know, understand and be able to do as the result of education. A system of policies, regulations, examinations, structures and funding enables teachers to teach to the best of their abilities. Sometimes educational systems can be used to promote doctrines or ideals as well as knowledge, which is known as social engineering. This can lead to political abuse of the system, particularly in totalitarian states and government. | Irish way to teach working perspectives variety of jobs mother's worries what is education | |
| B) I want to encourage my son to think about the job he's going to do when he's older. I want him to have an interesting job. But it's frightening to think that, if he makes the wrong decision now, he might spend his life doing a job he hates. He really loves electric things, so maybe he'll be a great scientist. But he's also very artistic, so maybe he'll become a great painter or musician. Still, there's plenty of time for us to decide how we're going to educate him. He hasn't even learned to walk yet! | ||
| C) For years, Ireland had one of the most complicated education systems in the world. There were many different kinds of school, but most of them had a lot in common. Classes were large and the teaching was very traditional. As in many countries, teachers used to hit the children if they made mistakes. Parents used to pay for their children's education and, as a result, there were schools for the rich and schools for the poor. Boys and girls went to different schools and studied different subjects. | ||
| D) There are some very unusual jobs. For example, imagine if your job was to try new products for a fast-food restaurant. It sounds good at first. But if you eat hamburgers all the time, you'd soon get fat. Some people have to try new types of toothpaste all day. At least if you brush your teeth all day they'd be white! Then imagine being an actor in a House of Horrors at a theme park. If you frighten people too much, they'd probably turn round and hit you. On the other hand, if you worked as a Father Christmas, people want presents from you all the time. A friend of mine once dressed up as a giant cheese to sell cheese at a supermarket. If you wear a stupid costume like that, people would laugh at you! | ||

McKinsey report this week estimates that one in five women's jobs in Britain and the US will be automated away in the next 10 years. Although men's jobs will disappear at about the same rate, the study says, they will do so in a different way: women may face particular difficulties in the transition to the future. It is striking that the report, like others of its kind, values women's work entirely in terms of money. |
