Useful tips
If you make mistakes with the number of words in your essay, you can lose points and even get a zero score. This is how words are counted:
- When we count words, we count all the words including auxiliary verbs, prepositions, articles and particles.
- Contractions and short forms are counted as one word: I've = one word, mustn't = one word, etc. (Mind that we normally do not use contracted forms in essays).
- Numbers like 145, 29,508, etc. are counted as one word: 65 = one word.
- Numbers written with a hyphen (-) are counted as one word: sixty-five = one word.
- Hyphenated and compound words written as one word are counted as one word: well-disposed = one word, absent-minded = one word, homemade = one word.
- Compound nouns written as two words are counted as two words: hot dog = two words.
- Abbreviations are counted as one word: UFO = one word.
Dear Maggie,
Thanks for your letter. I'm sorry to hear that your parents don't let you have a dog. I understand having a dog is what many children dream of. I guess you feel helpless and frustrated about your parents' decision.
The best advice I can give you is to understand your parents. Firstly, your parents might say they don't have enough time to look after a dog. In this case, you should show them your daily schedule with the time reserved for the dog's needs. Secondly, your parents might say that it costs a lot of money to have a dog. It would be a good idea to show them you're ready to spend your pocket money on the dog's needs. Finally, if your parents say they don't want to have a puppy, you should consider getting an adult dog. It can be very loyal and loving.
I hope this has helped. Please, let me know what happens.
Lindsey
