** Imagine you are doing the presentation on the topic "People with special needs". Choose which text describes the poster better.
Just because someone has a disability, it doesn’t mean he/she is “courageous”, “brave”, “special” or “superhuman.” People with disabilities are the same as everyone else. It is not unusual or unique for someone with a disability to have talents, skills and abilities.
As a general rule, it’s always okay to offer assistance. But try to read the situation first. Is there any indication of need other than the person’s disability?
Problems with offering and accepting help usually arise when a non-disabled person offering help thinks they know better what a disabled person needs. Don’t do this!
Don’t try to accommodate every last need of someone with a disability in attempts to be respectful. The better choice is to ask, “Is there anything I can help you with?” or, “Do you want me to get the door?” Helping before asking implies he or she is incapable and can offend the person, especially if they’ve worked hard to be able to care for themselves.
