Natural disasters pose a great threat to humankind. One of the most dangerous of them is an earthquake. It happens when tectonic plates of the Earth hit, bump or slide past other plates. Most quakes are too small for people to feel them, but sometimes they are strong and can be felt miles away.
Earthquakes often happen in the area of the rim of the Pacific Ocean: in South East Asia, Oceania and along the west coasts of North and South America.
In ancient times any natural disaster was unpredictable, but as time went on, people learned to predict earthquakes. It saved a lot of lives, however, they are still extremely dangerous.
Earthquakes can cause giant waves, landslides and volcanic eruptions.
