Homeless people were asked some questions about their life and how they became homeless. Read the short extracts of their interviews and answer the questions below.

George: I had a skateboarding accident. My brain was bleeding. I can't move my shoulder now. I worked in construction, but I can't do that job anymore. I can't do the hammering anymore. I tried living in a shelter but it's worse than jail. It's a mix of crazy people, the criminals, and the addicts. It's awful. They cough all night. I have a van. It's nicer than the shelter. I want to work. I'm having an interview today for an apprenticeship at the shop.

Mark: When I married her, we moved into her parents' house. I worked in a local warehouse. The company went bankrupt and I was fired. I looked for a new job but couldn't find anything. My wife and her parents got nervous, especially my wife. Eventually, she filed for divorce. When we divorced, I moved out. Since I didn't have my own house, I ended up on the street.

James: I left my mother's house by myself. I was thinking about my life one day and I said "What I'm doing?" There are people living out there, living on the street and I chose to go live with them. I feel so bad about them. My mother and I get along great, but I can't stand her new husband. My mother lives on Nob Hill. I go and visit my mom once a week, but live there, no. Mom owns an import-export business so she isn't poor. I never knew my real father.

Andrew: My parents retired and moved out of the area. I couldn't afford a place to live. I've been homeless since I was 19 years old. When I was a teenager, many bad guys harassed and beat me. I have anxiety and panic attacks. I had been addicted to drugs before, but I was able to stop. I know what that's like, and I'm not going back.
