Do you fancy visiting a famous Australian landmark while learning about one of the oldest cultures on our planet? Then come to the Tjungu Festival! This annual festival began in 2014 and takes place in late April in the Ayers Rock Resort. Ayers Rock \(or ‘Uluru’\) is a huge sandstone rock that is sacred to the country’s original inhabitants – the Aboriginal people – so it’s the perfect place to experience their culture!
There is a lot for visitors to see and do during the festival. On the opening day, you can watch a group of local Aborigines perform the Inma dance. This is a traditional dance which welcomes visitors to the event. Dancing continues throughout the festival while you
can also enjoy traditional Aboriginal music with instruments such as the didgeridoo. Another highlight is the Tastes of Tjungu section. Here you can sample traditional Aboriginal bushfood which includes various fruits, nuts and even insects! And don’t leave without picking up some souvenirs from the art and crafts stalls. You can buy beautifully decorated boomerangs and other arts and crafts for reasonable prices.
All in all, there’s a reason why ‘tjungu’ means ‘coming together’ in the local Aboriginal language. This festival is a gathering of Aboriginal people from across Australia, but it is also a way for people of all backgrounds to come together to celebrate Aboriginal traditions.
